I have never tried Kirkland batteries, which have very limited availability in the UK and are less that 30% of the cost of Duracell. As D works for me, that has been fine so far. But the size question is quite a different matter. The difference only has to be 1 or 2 mm for the contact to be lost or become irregular and your need to pack with paper indicates that. Next time you think of it, take away the paper and shake the mouse to see if you can hear movement. I do hope they have managed to free your machine from the freezing. Oh dear. That does sound bad; but of course, we can't answer for the techs. First, let's look at the old mice. You should not need to pack the things with tin foil or what have you. This usuallly happens if someone is buying the batteries on the cheap and getting sub standard copies. Alternately, it could occur when someone is using lower grade batteries. Use Duraceel or Energiser.

The key reason is size. The sort of batteries I describe above are often that touch too small and therefore need the packing; genuine Duracell or Energiser should not need packing.

Your Magic Mouse 2's will only work properly with MacOS 10.11. (El Capitan) and upwards. Your profile says you are using iOS11.1 when that is not possible on a Mac Mini. I suspect you may be on Yosemite or lower, and hence the trouble with the mice. Please try to find a moment to clarify and change your profile.
