Using your phone while charging it will not hurt anything. It will just take longer for the phone to charge. Putting your phone into Airplane mode will usually cut about 5-10 minutes off of the charging time.

I don’t use my phone during charging.
On your phone, go to Settings>Battery and see what applications are using up the battery.
