I got rid of malwarebytes manually, rather than their uninstaller. There is one file left, a kernel extension. It is protected and I can't get rid of it. Even in safe mode the OS says macOS needs it. Etrecheck shows it isn't loading. The file is located in Library/StagedExtensions/Library/Extensions. Apparently the folder is protected. Is there some way to change to file or folder permissions to get rid of it?

I suggest reinstalling it and then using the uninstaller.
The problem is that kernel extensions now have special handling from Apple. That may be what is preventing you from accessing the file. You might need to manually approve the extension (in System Preferences > Security & Privacy) for use. But all of that is assuming that the rest of the software is properly installed. You are well into uncharted territory here. Reinstall, approve, then uninstall. You'll be done in less than 1 minute.
