Erased Macintosh HD

I had some problems with installing Sierra High on my MacBook (2008). Attempted a clean install, but in the midst of reformatting my hard drive, I seem to have made the entire thing the OS X Base System drive. Now I can't reinstall Sierra because the hard drive is locked. I can't partition the drive in order to fix it either - keeps telling me "fail."

Seems like it knows what an epic fail this is? Haha..

Ps. Luckily I do have an external hard drive back up but am unable to do anything with it either.
