Photos and IPhoto

I have just upgraded to High Sierra and opened "Photos" . As my Mac is now accessing my photos from "IPhoto" is it duplicating them (and therefore using space) or is it just accessing them?

if it is duplicating them, can I delete either "Photos" or "IPhoto"?

These two articles describe how Photos and iPhotos share the same space on the hard drive for the photos in the initial migration from iPhoto to Photos:

Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support

The (hard) link between Photos and iPhoto

Remember, the hard links are for only those photos in iPhoto at the time of the migration to Photos.
