I read in EtreCheck's tips section today that it is wise to disable file sharing in System Preferences on a Mac because it interferes with the Firewall somehow. Would this apply to an iMac that is used only in your home or does that matter? I am confused by this. Please advise.

If you are not sharing files then don't enable sharing. If you are sharing files then enable sharing. Remote computers can not see your computer on your local private network. Make sure you have secured your router. If I have misinterpreted your question please provide more details.
This won't interfere with Home Sharing in iTunes, will it? I take it you mean to secure the router with a very good password, right?
If you are home sharing then leave sharing enabled. Yes have a good password and disable remote connection to the router.
How do you disable your remote connection to an Airport Express?
