I deleted an email account, when I try to add it back it errors that the account already exists

I am using OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6. I deleted an email account. I attempted to add the same account later and I get a message "account already exists". The account is no in any account list in settings or mail. Any recommendations?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015), iOS 11.1

Try Mail/Preferences/Accounts /Account Information. Select an account, then go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). From the drop down menu select Edit SMPT server list. See if the account is listed there. If so, delete the SMTP server for the account. Try to add the Mail account again.


You can also check System Preferences/Internet Accounts to see if the account is there.
