scanning on Canon printer disabled since upgrading

Since upgrading to High Sierra I've lost the scanning function on my new Canon wireless printer. The same happened on my HP printer when I upgraded to Sierra. Is there anything that can be done? It also disabled my Apple external disc reader, so this is a specific Apple software problem.
