It should just plug in. The 2014 iMac has Thunderbolt, and the 2011 27" display uses Thunderbolt. If you have the older Mini DisplayPort display, it also can plug into a Thunderbolt port. You shouldn't need any adapters.

You need to get Thunderbolt2 to mini display port adapter which might be not available.
Oops, that was not a helpful answer. The answer from Malcolm is the correct answer.
I did finally figure this out but not after I spent well over two hours talking with people at Apple and OWC from whom I purchased the iMac.
Just plug it in!
