Shut down or restart my iMac?

Should I shut down my iMac on a regular basis? Or should I just restart it? I normally leave it on all the time because it takes so long to reboot.

Thanks for any input.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.1)

Wow! Really good information. I wonder why the Apple genius didn’t mention this when I bought the new hard drive? Rhetorical, of course. I will look into the costs and decide on updating vs replacing with a new Mac. There are other issues after the hard drive replacement so I’m guessing that I will soon have a new Mac! Thanks for your help. Really appreciate it.

It should sleep instead of being shut down, however it's not a bad idea to restart it 1x week. If it's taking a long time to boot that indicates something may be wrong. Please follow the directions below.

Please post an EtreCheck report of your system and we can look for any obvious issues. Please click the link, download and run the app and then post the complete report it produces as your reply to this message.

Note that you have a) the absolute minimum RAM installed on your computer - you should seriously consider getting more RAM (a total of 8 or 16 GB), and b) you have a very slow 5400 rpm hard drive (which is 33% slower than the stock 7200 rpm drive in a 27" iMac. RAM is easy to upgrade yourself; the drive is more difficult, but you could have an AASP do it for you if you'd like. An SSD would seriously make yours a lot faster. However, also remember that yours is 7 years old, so you need to decide if upgrading components is worth it. I'd recommend OWC (macsales.com) for RAM and drives:

OWC Performance Upgrades for iMac 2010

As for shutting down: I do it at least once or twice a week; a shutdown/boot up cleans up a lot of files which may help with glitches.

Nov 18, 2017 10:42 AM in response to Porsche Girl

What your biggest problem is, is the computer is starved for RAM. 4GB was fine 7 years ago when still running Snow Leopard, however new OS's need more RAM. Upgrade to 12-16GB of RAM and the computer should respond. If you decide to do this only purchase from Crucial (buy it direct) or OWC (www.macsales.com) as iMacs are sensitive to using quality RAM and both vendors mentioned supply high quality products at reasonable prices.

Shut down or restart my iMac?
