Apple is unable to provide information about service coverage

Hi..when I enter my brand new sealed apple watch serial number on the apple check warranty site, I get the message that apple is unable to provide information about your service coverage. What does this mean. The set is brand new and not even opened. It was a gift and I don't have an invoice. What should I do?
