Messages Font Issue

I'm experiencing an issue with Messages on my Mac Book Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) 10.12.6 and iPhone 6 iOS 11.1.1 where the letter "I" is always replaced with "A (and some symbol with horizontal bars)" on incoming messages. See image below, which should say "I know!"

Does anyone know how to fix this?
