Unknown artist comes up for lots of music albums

I'm having a problem with my iPod syncing to my computer. When I download music and drag it to my iPod it says Various artists, after I uncheck the complication box it says unknown artist after that. I need help on how to edit the unknown artist part and put the actual artist name there. I have tried everything and nothing works.
