I have just been given an imac from my dad, i used disk utility to erase it but now I cannot download El Capitan!!! So currently I dont have an operating system. I am not sure exactly what version of El Capitan I am after but normally the apple would automaticall sort it out for me. Please help!!!

Look under the Apple menu (upper left).
Try booting into Internet Recovery (command - option/alt - R on a restart). It is a slow process. This will install the OS that the computer shipped with. You can then try to upgrade from there.
Like I stated, I erased the computer there is no operating system other than the base OS. The Imac will only boot to the page with Disk Utility and Install OS. I cant find any info from here.
What happens if you click Install OS?
