Changing Apple ID username to iCloud email

I saw recently that Apple is letting users use their iCloud email as their iCloud account instead of third-party emails. I've been using my gmail as a way to log in for years even though I don't use it. Every time I try to change my Apple ID username to my iCloud.com email it won't let me. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
