Fitbit Charge 2 won't pair with new iPhone 8

I bought my wife a new iPhone 8 and gave her my Fitbit Charge 2. I cannot get the phone to find and connect to the device. I've tried all the troubleshooting advice I could find online including on the fitbit site, no joy. I am able to pair the device with my iPhone 7 and a couple of other iPhones. The problem follows the iPhone 8. Anyone else having this issue?

If you go to fitbit supported devices

https://www.fitbit.com/devices

and check under supported devices you do not see Iphone 8/8 plus/X

I would put it on fitbit not updating their app to support those phones

this theory is helped by you trying it on other iphones and and a 7

(unless these other phones were the 8/X family)

I would not trust that list at all under any circumstances. My old phone was an Asus Zenfone 3 ZE552KL (and before that a Zenfone 2 ZE551ML), and both of those phones weren't on the list, but I got an Alta and a Blaze running perfectly fine.

The only theory here is that list is not to be believed for a second. I have a 6S Plus and it runs fine on that.
