External hard drive only shows up in System report, nowhere else - why??

So I have a brand new 1TB Seagate portable hard drive that I want to use for my Time machine backups. I've had it connected to my MacBook (Pro 13" mid 2012, running Sierra 10.12.6) once and managed to do a full backup - however the encryption didn't seem to want to complete, so I decided I'd remove it from my drives under the Time machine settings and then re-format it from scratch and just use it without the encryption setting on.

Upon removing it from my disks in Time machine and unplugging it from my computer everything was normal. However the next day I went to plug it in and reset it from scratch like planned, but it no longer shows up anywhere!
I've checked Disk utilities, run a First aid on my main disk (because the hard drive doesn't show up, but I'm willing to try anything).
NOTHING! Then I checked my System reports, and it was actually there! Nowhere else still though. And now apparently it doesn't even show up there consistently.......
Does anyone have a clue what's going on??

The drive didn't show up properly on the windows either - it claimed I could only format 100gb of the drive (and it's a 1TB drive).

In the meantime I wrote Seagate and they seem to think there may be a flaw in the drive somehow. Luckily it's under warranty, so they're going to replace it. Hopefully I won't have any issues with the new one.

Thanks for the help anyhow!
