App Update Error - Item no longer available

On my iPhone 7, with IOS 11.1.1, the App Store icon always has a red 1 on it to tell me that there is an update available. When I go into the updates screen I see one app under the "Available" category. However, when I click on the "Update" button for this app, it swirls around for a few minutes and then pops up a window that says "This item is no longer available". To remove the popup, the only choice is to click on "OK" - the only option available.

I have had this one app in my available for updates list for over a month now. I have updated all the other apps several times over this same time period. Why doesn't the app store recognize that there is no update available for this one app and remove it from the available for update list. There seems to be no way to manually remove it from the update list.

How do I get IOS and the app store to remove this fictional "available for update" entry from the list?

I have done a hard reset on my own once. Plus the phone hard reset when it upgraded from 11.0 to 11.1. That did not make any difference. I do not want to delete and re-add the app because I want to keep the data associated with it. And why should I have to. I would think that if the app store software was smart enough to know the update doesn't exist, it should be smart enough to remove it from the available for update list.
