How can I get the new MacOS High Sierra to open external links in Chrome?

I have a MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), 1.4GHz, Intel Core i5, 4Gb 1600 MHz DDR3. I installed the new High Sierra OS 10.13.1 a couple days ago.

Problem is that links in email (using the Mail program that came on the macbookair) have stopped opening new tabs showing the linked page in Google Chrome. When I click on the link, it opens (with every click) a new Chrome window with a New tab but never goes to the webpage.

I don't want to use Safari, but if I open the email (through a web address to Google mail) in Safari, the links work to open the webpage as usual.

How can I get it to work in Chrome again?

My default browser is still set to Chrome. My default mail program is still the original Mail. The only change is the new OS.
