When is face recognition used on new iPhone X

I've set up face recognition on my new iPhone X, but the phone never asks for my face to open it. (In fact it never asks for the passcode either). So why is the face recognition needed, and when is it needed? I imagine it could be good for security, but the phone seems always unlocked.

Thanks.

It doesn't give an option if you have Face ID activated. It just does what it's supposed to do, When you raise your phone and it sees your face, you'll see the lock unlock in the upper center of your screen and you swipe up to get to your home screen. If you don't want it to do that, you go into settings and turn off Face ID and then use your passcode as you've always had the ability to do in the past. It's supposed to be instantaneous and seamless in operation. And to me it is.
