mail preview pane in high Sierra is black when mail is selected

Using apple mail in high Sierra the preview pane on the right just goes black when I select a mail. Not always but mostly. Tried ditching most of the mail components and resetting it up to no avail. Any ideas?

Mac mini, macOS High Sierra (10.13.1)
