Since iOS 11, need to manually check for app updates to have App Store badge

Since I installed iOS 11 (and had my iPhone 5S replaced by Apple because they couldn't replace the battery), the App Store doesn't check for app updates.

For the last 4 years, my iOS was setup to not install updates automatically. But the App Store app would show a notification badge whenever an app had an update. I would then update the app manually.

Now with iOS 11, I don't get the badge automatically. I have to go to the Updates 'tab' and pull down the page to check for updates.

Because I also switched iPhone, I had to 'play' with some settings, so it's entirely possible that it's my fault, but I can't find how to have update notifications while not automatically updating the apps.
