iOS sound in?

I want to transfer some old cassettes to MP3.

The apps on iOS look easier than on MacOS [and Macs no longer support sound in via the 3.5mm jack]. If I get a 3.5mm to Lightning converter do iPads or iPhones support sound in via that connector, or only sound out? I can't find any mention of sound in and iOS in this context anywhere.
