Random restart after sleep (sleep wake failure)

Hi,

sometimes when I put my MacBook Air (Mid 2011 - currently on High Sierra, but also with the olds OS versions I had this problem) to sleep, when I wake it up again it restarts randomly.

It happens both with the battery fully charged or not, and, for that I'm able to *****, only when I unplug the Mac from power before I close the lid.

My battery is currently with 850 cycles and in "Service Battery" status, could it depends only on the bad battery life status?

I don't think so, because I read in other Apple discussions communities the same problem among various MacBook models, also the newer ones.

My first thought, in your case, would be the battery. When you get the 'Service Battery,' that means your battery is failing. An OEM Apple battery is not considered Consumed until 1,000 power cycles. I would recommend getting a battery change.

There is a chance that your machine is kernel panicking when it is trying to wake from sleep. This could be triggered from third-party extensions, bad RAM, peripheral devices (USB hubs are super common to cause kernel panics), and other things.

Lastly, I know this sounds silly, but how often do you purposefully power down your machine? I have seen this issue happen when people rarely ever power off their laptops. Some times, when the machine hasn't had a reboot in quite some time, it will reboot while trying to wake.

Yes I think too that the problem very probably is related to the bad battery status, in fact I think I'm going to change it in the next few weeks, but first I need to find which battery choose (I think the original Apple battery is too expensive for me and it not worths because the age of my Mac).

About the other possible causes that you suggest, I think you're also right. I am used to keep open several apps because of my work and to not reopen them if I need to use them often, unluckily with only 4GB of ram it isn't very simple to manage this, and for the same reasons I don't restart my Mac every time but only once a week.
