macbook pro mid 2012 update

Hi,

I have to upgrade my MacBook Pro (mid 2012). Now it runs 10.8.5 operating system and from the app store I can only upgrade to High Sierra, but I'm afraid that something bad can happen. Can I just upgrade to Mavericks (it's all that I need)? How can I do that safely?
