Hitting key after turning screen off turns it on, but dark.

I have a 2015 Macbook Pro with High Sierra installed. Under Sierra, I could turn my screen off with Ctrl-Shift-Eject, and then if I hit a key, it would turn on again.

Now if I hit a key, it turns on, but the screen is very, very dim. I have to adjust the brightness once -- either up or down -- for the screen to go back up to normal brightness.

What is going on? Thanks.

macOS Sierra (10.12.4)
