Can't eject SD card properly

Tell me if I am doing this right. To eject any device, in this case it's an SD card, I find the device in Finder, click on the symbol to the right of the device name that is an upward pointing triangle with a bar below it. I wait for the triangle symbol to disappear and remove the SD card. The problem is overtime I do this I get a message that the device wasn't ejected properly. As I recall this happens USB devices, also.


Am I doing it right and, if so, why do I get the message saying I didn't.


2012 Mac

Sierra 10.12.6
