How do you turn off background apps when home button not working?

I've just upgraded my iPhone 6 to the 11.1.1 and not only has the finger recognition gone but my home button stopped working. I've turned on assistive touch to resolve for now, but how do you turn off any background apps that run? My batteries suffering & its only day 1!
