Why is iMovie changing the colour of the photos I am splicing?

As you can see, the photos I am uploading and the output colour of the video on the right are different - saturation levels etc are all as they should be. Never encountered this before, it is driving me insane - HELP!

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.53 GHz), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

It appears you are using iMovie version 9. Is your OS 10.6.8 as shown in your profile. If you are using El Capitan or sierra there is a compatibility problem with version 9. One of the incompatibilities is the reduction in contrast and color anomalies that occur. Perhaps this is your situation.
