How to add a single number to a group contact?

I know you can add a group contact by going through Icloud.com and adding your contacts there. Currently when I try to message with that group contact it adds the iphone number, home number and email that is associated with the contact. Is there any way to add a single number from that contact (i.e. Iphone number) to the group contact instead of every number associated with the contact?
