iMac stuck on boot screen

Hello

So I have a 2011 iMac 27inch

Just upgraded software to latest version.

Seemed to then overheat to the point that the screen was garbled. So cleaned vents now it is stuck on boot screen and cycles round on that constantly restarting.

I have tried to get into all the recovery or safe modes and none work. Nothing seems to work. Potentially has a cable come unplugged etc as it won't even let me go into safe mode.

Try resetting the PRAM per the directions in iMac SMC and PRAM reset and see if restarts. If it does NOT then boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup) and then open Disk Utility and run First Aide. If the computer won't boot into the RP or there are errors when you run First Aide then it's time to take it to your local AASP for service.

Good luck.

SMC may be inacessible if the firmware password is enabled but Recovery should allow it - from what you are saying neither is accessible to you.

Shut down

Disconnect all external devices

reset the smc (if it works)

reset the NVRAM (if it works)

then boot into safe mode

then reboot normally with devices disconnected.

recovery mode on the 2011 iMac 27" required a firmware update to allow it to work

that being the case if the mac came with a restore disk you might want to try that or see this link to create a bootable usb
