When I start to type a contacts name into the recipients place my contacts no longer show up . How do I correct this?

Ok I have an iPhone 5s and when I start to add a contacts name into the recipients area in messaging, my contacts no longer come up. Also in my messages only the telephone number comes up not the contacts name.
