Upgrading of iPhoto after having upgraded Macbook pro

Have just upgraded my Macbook pro to High Sierra but did not realise my iphoto library was not compatible. Can I upgrade my iphoto library or is it too late? What can I do to get my photos back?

MacBook Pro, iOS 10.3.1

Use Photos. If needed, click here and run the tool.

Photos just freezes when I try to upgrade (or get started).

I downloaded that tool but I don't see where it is installed and I don't seem to be able to do anything with it?
