Hi
My iMac 2013 goes black when disconnected from my MBP in Target Display Mode. I have tried unplugging the cable and CMD+F2, No difference.
I can hear it run and share screen to my MBP from “share screen” in Finder on MBP. I can use the mouse and keyboard, but there is no way i can get the screen back on.
Both systems is 10.13.1.
Hmmmm.....
Disconnect the setup and all other external devices from the iMac except for mouse and keyboard.
Reset the iMac's SMC, as per > How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
and the NVRAM, as per > How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
Then re-connect the Mac's and test it by entering, using and exiting TDM.
Its 10.13.1 there is broken.
Mountain Lion and Sierra works.
Other users on Apple forums also have a lot of Thunderbolt problems with 10.13.1.
The only other thing that I can suggest, is to turn off Screen Sharing to see if it might be causing a problem. Other than that, I'm fresh out of ideas.
Personally I think that I would also contact Apple Support and see if they have any other ideas.
Same here, iMac 2013 connected to MacBook Pro 2017. Goes black on disconnect and also when MacBook goes to sleep and turned on again, black screen on iMac and signal lost (10.13.1 as well). Turn iMac off and on (power button) is the only solution... 😕

Hi again
Now i have tried restarting, resetting SMC and NVRAM, keyboard and mouse are wireless.
Restarted MBP too.
Starting TDM and seeing it working, wait five seconds, exit TDM and black screen on iMac.
Talked with support.
Told them I had restarted, reset SMC and NVRAM.
Told me to reinstall, did that after formating drive(including removing BOOTCAMP).
Still black screen.
I will try to call them again sunday.
Talked with them again, in the end i talked with a Senior, who will try to talk with an Engineer now.
Waiting for them to talk with the Engineer.
This time we tried with safe mode and a new admin user.. nothing :-(

No news, waiting for the engineer to call me.
I have talked with them.
They sended an .DMG file i had to run to collect some data, they got the data and now i am waiting for them to analyze it :-)
