Is it possible to log out of macOS High Sierra while programs still run?

'Lock screen' stops programs from running - like virus scan and Time Machine backup. Older OS versions allowed a user to log out while programs ran in the background but I am uncertain how to accomplish it in macOS High Sierra. Sometimes I wish to step away from my computer and log out for security reasons. Any recommendations?
