Adding a title in iMovie 10 causes it to freeze

When I try to add a title in iMovie 10.1.8 to a short video clip, iMovie becomes unresponsive for at least minutes. I've tried dragging a title to the timeline, and positioning the playhead at the desired location and double-click the title. I'm looking at the iMovie Help narrative for adding a title.

What am I doing wrong? How can one add a title without iMovie freezing up?

Running High Sierra on a 2017 iMac.

Well, the Apple forums are just as helpful now as in the past.

I found some troubleshooting info onnthe Web and blew away the preference file and another file, restarted iMovie and the freezing stopped.

Apple, your support of your applications is pathetic.

After more tinkering, I've discovered that this is the process for getting a title into a video clip:

1) Either drag the title type to the timeline or position the scrub bar to the desired location and double-click on the desired title.

2) iMovie locks up. Go to Finder and force close iMovie.

3) Restart iMovie and go to the project in step 1). There will be a title on the timeline that is editable.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I hope someone has a better process!
