Have white screen with gray circle with slash on MacBook Pro. How do I get my normal log in screen back?

Tried to download High Sierra on MacBook Pro. Now I have a white screen with a gray circle and a slash through it. How do I get past this and back to regular log on screen? Command option esc or turning off laptop doesn’t affect the white screen. Please help!

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), Before High Sierra

Hi,

When you see a circle with a slash symbol instead of the Apple logo, it means your Mac couldn't find a valid System Folder to start up from.

Try reinstalling macOS using macOS recovery.
