iMovie audio is in sync but does not line up on the time line

I imported a movie with airdrop but when I go to edit the movie my audio is in sync but the timeline does not represent whats going on in the movie. For example the wave form shows flat (silence) while the speaker is talking even thought his voice is in sync with the movie. I usually edit these types of movies by searching for the silence but now this method it is useless.
