I used to be able to open the same app twice and have it split screen, but can no longer do so. This was helpful for editing between two documents. Dear Apple, is there a way to bring back that function? Also, can you bring back swiping from the right side to pull up a second window?

Hi. I do not believe that Split View ever supported two copies of the same app. Safari creates a Split View of its own, but that's not the iOS Split View.
Regarding Slide Over, once you've selected an app for Slide Over, that app is always available with a swipe from the right edge of the screen.
