Question:

Question: Mid-2012 MacBook Pro running very slow

Hi

Would appreciate any help with this. I have run a check with Etre and pasted the report below. I will follow the advice within it but any further insights on what I might do to speed things up would be much appreciated. Startup after a Restart can take 30 minutes or more and the speed once started is very variable - generally very slow after startup but then a little faster.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Solution: replace your hard-drive with an SSD.

I have a MBP mid-2012 and experienced many of the same problems until I upgraded the hard-drive with and SSD.

Until then, Use only the default OS X apps.

I found that apps that "files sync" grenerate allot read/writes to the hard-drive there by bogging it down.

Apps like dropbox, safari, chrome, iCloud, google drive, adobe updater, etc.

Solution is to open each app and access its settings and disable "file syncing" of files, bookmarks, photos, etc.

If you have many accounts on many computers this becomes worse.

Just try using the default OS X apps for now.

The true solution would be to replace your hard-drive with an SSD.

I no longer experience beech balls and my MBP works fine. 10 times Better than NEW.

8gb. of ram is fine. 16gb. of ram is just max.

Judging by the amount of time it took to run the report, I'd guess there is a problem with your startup drive. Boot into Recovery and run Disk Utility > First Aid. Let us know what it reports.

Also uninstall Intego and Sophos. No anti-virus or so-called "cleaning" apps are necessary or recommended for Mac OS. They can interfere with Mac's own built-in security. At best they will use unnecessary resources and at worst will bork your system.

This:

System Software:

Operating system information not found!

also suggests a failing hard drive. However, keep reading.

Normally I would agree that the long runtime suggests a failing hard drive but in your model, age has showed a weak link. Fortunately it is one that can be fixed at home for little money.

Now that some of this model are reaching 3-5 years of service the weak spot that shows up is the ribbon cable that connects the hard drive to the logic board. It follows a convoluted path inside the computer with sharp bends. The vibration of normal use and transport seem to be cause the cable to weaken or wear at the places it has to make those 90° corners.

The cable is user-serviceable even for one without a tech background, and a new cable is only US$15. Instructional video here:

MacBook Pro Installation Video at MacSales.com

and the cable is here:

Apple 821-1480 Hard Drive / SSD Cable For 13-inch... at MacSales.com

Even if the hard drive proves to be bad, you should replace the cable at the same time as the hard drive becasue the old one is surely showing its service scars. You can try a new cable now to see if that helps. If not, you will be attaching a new drive to a new cable so it's all fresh.

Within the last month I replaced the rotational HD with a SSD in my MBP13 2012 (same specs as yours) and ordered a new cable with the SSD. Changing the cable was a bit fiddly but by no means was It an onerous task.

Two other thoughts:

I would try cleaning out some of the log-in items. You have quite a few.

Google Drive will slow your computer as will most similar products like MS OneDrive and Carbonite. The only online backup product I've found that does not exact a performance penalty is DropBox. Even when I'm on a slow internet connection, its data-saving functions are transparent. Try turning off Google Drive, restarting the computer and running Etrecheck again. No need to post a new report--just post the runtime if it goes down significantly.

Just deleting Sophos, google drive, intego and the various orhapned files brought the Etre report run time down to 4:39!! More than 20 minutes faster and no problems completing all of the checks. Will try the cable next but already the machine is so much more usable. Thanks again for the help.
