App with Apple TV volume control?

I'm using Apple TV for video, an airport express for audio, with output to powered speakers. I can turn the volume up and down from the Apple TV. But it's cumbersome and requires stopping play. Is there an app out there that has addressed this? There is no volume control on the tv app on my iPad or in the Apple TV remite app I downloaded from the App Store.
