Even when I have dropped only one picture into the trash icon, and then empty it, the popup box asks if I am sure and, after clicking continue the popup box goes away but it takes a very long time to empty the trash...WHY? I have really only noticed this for a month or so. I have a MAC running OS Sierra and all updates are installed.

Yes, I thought you were running Snow Leopard because you posted in the SL forum.
You can try rebuilding the Trash:
Launch Terminal and at the prompt copy & paste this command:
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
Press Return.

Go to Finder menu > Preferences > Advanced and see if you have "Empty Trash Securely" check marked. If it is uncheck it.
This is not even available in my operating system.
