I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro that is taking a very long time to boot up. I updated the OS a few weeks ago and haven't had this problem until today. The apple screen came up as usual and the bar began to move under it until it got to the end and its been like this for a couple of hours. I've turned it off and restarted with the same result. Any ideas of what to do from here?

Is yours a non-retina model? If so, either the hard drive or the SATA cable is likely failing/has failed.
Replacement is simple - there are some good DIY resources out there, and a new drive and cable are relatively inexpensive. It would be worth changing to an SSD if it is the drive failing.
If you have a retina model, have Apple check it.
Are you able to run Apple diagnostics? (Hold down the "D" key while restarting.)
Yes it's a non-retina model. I have a 1 TB hard drive in this. I don't think they make an SSD that big?
I'm running the diagnostics by using the D key. Thanks for the info but it looks like it is stuck. It says "Probing your hardware, this may take a minute." the bar is 3/4 full and appears to have stopped.

Ok the probe finished and I then conducted the test which found No Trouble. I guess I just need to let this thing finish booting up which could take several hours or days.
Any other recommendations?

Hi - there are 1 TB SSDs available, and they're not as expensive as they used to be. Depending on the age of your hard drive, it could well be failing.
If you replace it, I'd also replace the SATA cable at the same time - it's a simple procedure.
Try restarting in safe mode - hold the shift key when starting up.
I've tried that and it always comes up with this apple screen and the bar under it moving from the left to right slowly.
