Tap and drag to highlight text

Just bought a new MacBook Pro and I am trying to tap and drag to highlight text. However, I find no options for this under system preferences and the only solution online is from 2014 using a different OS. I’m sure I am missing something. Surely Apple wouldn’t make it more difficult to do such an easy task.
