Question:

Question: Sporadically occurring kernel panic

Hello,

I'm getting kernel panics on a 2013 iMac with the latest OS 10.13 (High Sierra) installed.

All the loaded kexts in the log are from Apple.

I've determined it's a software problem, as I tried restoring a time-machine backup of the machine to another iMac, and that iMac still gets kernel panics.

There is nothing obvious. No 3rd party kernel extensions, and this panic does not include a trackback telling which kernel extension was in control when it panic'ed.

Is the RAM the original or did you get 3rd party RAM and upgrade your iMac? 3rd party RAM has is a common source of kernel panics. Sometimes an operating system upgrade will change the memory access pattern, and start to use RAM in a way that that finds a weakness in the RAM.

If you have external devices attached, consider unplugging them. If you have you have USB keyboard and/or mouse, consider using another while debugging this situation. Sometimes failing USB devices or even just a broken USB cable can trigger a kernel panic. Of course these frequently have a backtrace with the USB drivers in the trace.

You should also try an SMC reset and an NVRAM reset

<Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support>

<How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support>

The suggestion to boot into Safe mode is a good one. It will clean out the kernel caches.

Consider re-installing macOS over-top of the existing installation. If there are corrupted executables, this will replace them.

Consider making a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store and have them run their extensive hardware diagnostics. They have the quick form that they can run while you sit at the bar, and they have the kind where you leave your iMac and they run them overnight. Yes, I know hauling a 27" iMac to the Apple store is a pain (I've done it twice myself), but it is a way to get the Genius to look a it.

OH Yea. could you look at the other kernel panics and see if the all the the same panic, or if it varies. If it varies, it might be nice to see a few of them. Maybe the variation will tell us something.
