Macbook Pro won't wake up with 10.13.1

I am running the High Sierra 10.13.1 on a Macbook Pro (Retina, 15 inch, late 2013) and using an external monitor (Dell UP3214Q) , bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I have been having substantial problems with sleep/wake-up ever since I installed the new OS. Basically once the system goes to sleep for any amount of time more than a couple of minutes I can no longer wake it up. Not by clicking the mouse, not by typing on the external keyboard, not by raising the lid, not through the built-in keyboard, and not with the trackpad. I have reset the NVRAM and the SMC and the problem persists. Is this a known problem with the OS and what else should I try?

no, not a known problem

Shut down

Disconnect all external devices

reset the smc

REPEAT THIS 2 OR 3 TIMES THEN reset the NVRAM

then boot into safe mode

then reboot normally with devices disconnected.

Thanks for the reply. I did as you suggest but unfortunately the problem persists. I think I can characterize my problem a little more precisely now. When I am only using the external display, if the Mac goes to sleep for more than a short interval, the external monitor goes into power save mode. Prior to the installation of High Sierra, I could wake up the system from the external keyboard or mouse and go on from where I was prior to the sleep session. Now not only can I not do that anymore, but the Macbook itself won't respond to anything other than holding the power switch down for at least 10 seconds which of course leads to a shutdown and a reboot.
