I have created iMovie projects in version 9. I want to move the to another computer running iMovie 11. Where do I place the old project files so that iMovie 11 can find then and update them?

iMovie version 9 is also called iMovie 11. The latest version of iMovie 11is version 9.0.9 Is that what you have on both computers? If so just move the iMovie projects folder and iMovie events folder to the other computer. They should be in your movies folder or at the root level of an EHD if you are using an external drive. Move them to the movies folder of your other computer.
I am clearly using an older version of iMovie. The version which is clearly newer on the other computer, even has a completely different interface. On my version 09 which has the version # of 8.0.6 (821) seems to be completely different from 11. In my Movies folder the iMovie projects have an extension of .rcproject. This disappear when it is copied.
According to the directions I have read on the Apple site, we should be able to have the project files on the top level of an external drive and they will be found automatically when we go to the File menu and choose to update them.
The directions you read apply when updating from iMovie version 9 to version 10. You are seemingly updating from version 8 to version 9. I am not familiar with version 8 so I can only guess that if you have iMovie projects folder and iMovie events folder at the root level of your external drive iMovie 9 will see them. Wish I could be more helpful but I have never used iMovie 8.
JIm, it is strange. When I go to About iMovie, it says version 9 and then give the version # as 8 .0.6. My friend's version of iMovie says version 11 but then gives this information version 10.1.6. What does Apple mean by the first version listing if it goes on and gives another version #.

iMovie version 8 was released as a part of the iLife 9 package which is why you see both numbers in about iMovie. I can't explain what your friend is seeing as my iMovie version 10.x.x says only version 10.x.x. As far as I am aware iMovie 8 projects can only be updated to version 9 and only version 9.0.9 projects can be updated to version 10.
I have a slightly different problem now. Following Apple directions, I updated my OS to High Sierra. Even though they indicated my laptop could go to High Sierra. the updated resulted in many features of my computer failing to work (such as the track pad). I ended up going to a Mac Technician and spending almost $100 to get the OS completely removed by erasing my hard disk. El Capitan was installed. Now I don't have a working version of iMovie. Apple indicates that there is no way to install iMovie 10.1.6 (which runs on El Capitan). I have spent hours with Customer Service without any results. The only version of iMovie which is available for download and install is 10.1.8 which won't run on El Capitan. Does anyone know a way I can get version 10.1.6 so I can continue to use iMovie?

Sorry you are having so many problems. I know of no way to legitimately obtain iMovie 10.1.6. What I would do is make a backup of your El Capitan system either by time machine or a cloning software like Superduper or Carbon copy cloner. Then upgrade to High Sierra, hopefully it will work ok this time, and then install iMovie 10.1.8.
Sorry, my suggestion was based on the hope that upgrading from El Capitan instead of your earlier, and I presume, older OS would yield a successful High Sierra upgrade. Wish I could have been more helpful.

Good to see you have gone back to El Capitan and like you say, you are stuck. Not so---
You may not be able to upgrade past OS 10.11 but you can still use iMovie up to version 09 (About iMovie 8.0.717).
To go to a higher version of iMovie you need to upgrade to OS 10.12 but you are stuck with 10.11.
To get iMovie back you will need the iLife 09 install disc. If you can't locate a copy, PM me as I may be able to help.

I also find that when I copy an iMovie project in preparation for moving it, the extension "rcproject" disappears. Is that why the iMovie 11 can't find the project to update it?

Don't move project files. Move the iMovie projects folder as I mentioned previously.
Jim, I already went that route. High Sierra will not operate properly on my late 2009 MacBook. I'm stuck.

Those downloads are just updates. You must have iMovie 9 to use them.
