Upgrade Path from Lion To High Sierra

I have just had to replace the hard disk of my MacBook Pro, which was previously running Sierra. It's quite a high spec, if a few years old. I was very happy that the computer automatically downloaded an OS and installed it onto the new disk.

The computer downloaded Lion (10.7.5), and the Sierra upgrade is dangled in front of me on the App store, but when I click "get", it says it requires a minimum of 10.8. There appears to be no way to restore my computer to Sierra! There are some links in the App Store for upgrading Lion to intermediate OS's - but following the links leads to empty pages.

In an ideal world, yes "You should be able to upgrade to Sierra from 10.7.". But you can only upgrade from 10.8, not 10.7. And there was no way to upgrade on-line from 10.7 to 10.8. In the UK, I couldn't even buy 10.8.

Eventually I gave up and took a trip to the Apple Store who were able to do the upgrade in a couple of minutes - but I'm lucky because I could get to an Apple Store.
