Airport Time Capsule has started making a soft whirling noise and the light flashes yellow at the same time. Any ideas as to why this is happening and what should done to correct it?

If it is overheating.. which is most likely scenario .. it can be a blocked fan .. full of dust.

When the LED status light is flashing yellow, you might be able to determine the reason that it is doing so by using the AirPort Utility.
From a Mac, run the AirPort Utility, then click on the amber circle near the Time Capsule. You should see a pop-up that would include status. Let us know what you find.
By the way.. if it is indeed overheating. Return it immediately to Apple for replacement.. assuming it is slightly less than a year and is still in warranty.. You cannot disassemble it to clean the fan without breaking warranty and it is hard job to do without leaving marks on the plastic.
If you have applecare on Mac, iPad or apple tv it should also cover the TC BUTT ugly .. Apple have been denying clear coverage of TC in the agreement in some markets.. so if you are stuck you might have to DIY.
