Deauthorizing old user from App Store

I have a 2008 iMac that I purchased from a college graduate who was moving on to a laptop. I cannot get ride of his email and password when trying it's time to upgrade an app or program. I have called Apple, I have changed my Apple ID, on all other programs my ID is recognized - just not the App Store. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
